Reptiles and Insects

What a great night last night. Vicky from Eduzoo did us proud with the wonderful bearded dragons from Australia. They were great subjects – not at all phased by flash lights and very friendly too. I just loved the tarantula. The millipede was not so much my thing. The hissing cockroaches were beautifully patterned – I really liked those stripes. I think the shots we were able to get were just what was needed. Thanks to Eduzoo for a great display.

Some of you asked me for some links to some macro photography equipment. Here are some links…

Macro Ring-light Always-on System (LED) (excellent value!)
This unit is sophisticated. It is not an LED flash. The unit allows for +ve or -ve power adjustments for several stops of light. It has ring adaptors for different lens sizes. It allows an always-on mode which is great for setting your light levels and extended use. It also allows you to flash from only the left or right, which emphasises shadows on the subject. It is light-weight and the batteries are long lasting as LEDs are very efficient. You will have to do some chimping with these LED units. They do not offer true TTL functionality. But then again, they are affordable! (hover to preview):

Macro Ring-Flash and Always-on System (LED) (incredible value!)
Here is a link to the unit which I was using last night. It is an incredible £23 (!!!). This IS a full flash AND always-on unit. It has left and right bias as well as power levels to adjust. It appears on this page to be only for Canon cameras. However, on other pages the FC100 is advertised for Nikon too although more expensive.): (hover to preview) Neewer LED Macro Ring Flash FC100 For Canon Camera DSLR Canon EOS 1D/ 1Ds Series 7D/5D MarkII/60D/50D/40D/30D/20D/10D 550D/500D/450D/400D/350D/300D

Macro Extension Tubes (unbelievable value!)
I have shown a number of you some simple macro extension tubes. These excellent tubes are all you need to do great macro work. They work with most lenses, even enhancing macro lenses! They do not allow you to use auto-focus. However, a good macro shooter rarely uses AF anyway. You get much better macro results with manual focus on all macro lenses. So nothing lost and lots to gain…

Ring-flash Units (The full monty!)
True macro flash units are expensive. They offer full through the lens compatibility with your camera, a high intensity flash as well as power control for the light levels. Usually they have manual and auto settings and they are able to offer a variety of other functions and compatabilities. The price varies on the manufacturer or merchant and the version. However, look around. Here are the Canon and Nikon versions:

Adaptable LED Light units
Many of you may have seen these in use last night. I use them to light all sorts of things including macro work, still life and specialist portraits. The light is strong and the unit affordable. I find them to be really adaptable and especially useful for product and still life work. I have two to help light from a variety of angles. I bought mine in Tesco about a year ago for £13 each. So, at half that price, these represent excellent value… (hover to preview): 72 LED Worklight Lamp Emergency Torch*NEW*
