Just a reminder that Swan Upping takes place this Wednesday, 17th, starting from the Compleat Angler 8.30-9.00.
The bridge will probably be crowded as school children are usually there to watch the Swan Uppers take a tipple, and set off. I shall be down on the river bank by the bridge, on the Court Garden side, ready to leg it upstream as the boats set off. It’s not too difficult to keep up at first, but when the boats get further upstream, engines are employed! However, there are at least two swan marking sites before Temple Lock, one on the Marlow side, so some good shots can be taken of the boats as they form a circle to trap the swans and cygnets, then bring them to shore for weighing and marking. Temple Lock is another good spot to be as the boats come through. Then we cross over the river and proceed to Hurley Lock.
It is a wonderful and ancient tradition, and we should take advantage of it while it lasts.
Maybe see some of you on Wednesday.
